What Is A Bowed Tendon Injury?
When people say a horse has a "bowed tendon" they are generally
referring to tearing of the superficial digital flexor tendon in the middle of the
cannon bone region. It gets its name because this tear causes a curved,
bow-like swelling on the back of the leg between the knee and the ankle.
Although the swelling is usually in the middle of the cannon bone, it may be
behind the knee or extend from the knee to the pastern. Any breed or type
of performance horse can be at risk for tendon injury. Tendon injuries can
heal slowly with  fibrous scar tissue replacing the torn tendon fibres. This
means the healed tendon is less elastic, leaving the tendon vulnerable to
re-injury. A significant injury may mean the horse will not be able to return to
its previous level of performance due to the persistent weakness of the
tendon.

How Do Bowed Tendons Occur?
The superficial digital flexor tendon is made of protein fibers that are
arranged longitudinally, forming a long attachment between the muscle
above the knee, and the long and short pastern bones just above the hoof.
The tendon fibers are elastic but may tear if over-stretched. Incorrect
positioning of the leg in relation to the horse's body weight can tear the
tendon fibers. Tendon damage may occur when the horse suffers uneven
footing, poor conformation or incorrect shoeing and can even result from a
single mis-step or the result of cumulative stress or fatigue of the fibers.

Once the tendon fibers tear, bleeding within the tendon causes acute
swelling, heat, and pain. Your horse may or may not exhibit lameness. In
fact, many horses with serious tendon damage are never lame. Swelling
also occurs around the tendon due to an accumulation of fluid, known as
edema. In the short term, ice packs or cold hosing your horse's leg should
help decrease the local inflammation and swelling.

What Are The Best Treatments For Bowed Tendons?
If your horse has suffered a tendon injury, your vet will work with you to
develop a rehabilitation plan. Your horse will need stable rest with restricted
exercise to encourage healing of the tendon while preventing re-injury.
Once the tendon has cooled, Thermomedic far infrared
equine leg wraps
can help improve localized blood circulation to assist decrease residual
swelling in the leg. Horse leg wraps are the ideal choice for leg protection
during exercise and transport, as well as helping to speed up the recovery
process.
