| Health Care News Wednesday 15 June 2011 Did you know research shows that watching a couple of hours of television each day, as the average Australian does, can lead to a shorter life? New studies on the health effects of television viewing show that every two hours we spend in front of the TV can increase our risk of premature death by about 15 per cent. Further, the risk of Type 2 diabetes is increased by 20 per cent and heart disease risk increased by 15 per cent, according to the research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The analysis included an Australian study conducted last year which shows that for Australians, watching TV is the most common daily activity following work and sleep. Prof Dunstan, who conducted the Australian study, stated that watching TV created several negative health consequences for us. When people are indulging in this sedentary behaviour they aren't moving their limbs. Therefore, there is little muscle contraction occurring, especially in the legs, he said. Muscle contractions assist you body to take up glucose effectively to use it for energy. "When we're sitting and not getting those contractions, it really lessens our body's response to taking that glucose up, so we're at a less optimal physiological regulator," Prof Dunstan said. So what it the answer? Turn off the TV and get more exercise. Wednesday June 8 2011 Did you know Australian researchers have developed a new "smart" bandage that changes colour as a wound worsens or improves? This medical breakthrough may lead to improved treatment of ailments such as wounds, diabetic foot problems and leg ulcers. Researcher and inventor, Louise van der Werff, a materials scientist at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, said the dressing is designed to change from red to blue, depending upon the temperature of the wound. She stated, "If the wound becomes infected then it typically gets warmer. It would get cooler if there were, for example, a compromised blood supply." Changes in wounds were not always obvious to medical practitioners so the fibre she helped devise, using liquid crystals which react to different temperatures, could show changes of less than half a degree Celsius to help improve patient treatment. "A temperature is sort of an obvious indication, if they can see that through a colour change then hopefully it can help a lot," said Van der Werff. Currently completing her doctorate at Monash University, she said plans were underway to incorporate the colour-changing fibre into a textile which could then be woven or knitted into a wound dressing. "Our main target is for chronic wound care, the elderly, obese and people with diabetes who can get wounds like leg ulcers and pressure ulcers which can really last a long time without healing properly," she said. Smart textiles, including nanofibres are helping improve patient treatment outcomes for all Australians. Australian scientists are leading the world in developing breakthrough textile and therapeutic fibre technology. |
