Do You Suffer From Swollen Ankles?
Thermomedic Health Fact Files
Do you suffer from:

Swollen Feet?   Aching Legs?   Arthritic Pain?   Cold Feet?
Fluid Retention?  Poor Leg Circulation?
How do you Know if You have Circulation Problems?

Some common foot and lower leg medical complaints can be cold feet, swollen
ankles, aching legs, sore feet, dry skin or discoloured skin. Thermomedic
Therapy Ankle socks assist to warm, support and sooth swollen, cold feet,
ankles and the lower leg. The gentle warming effect of Thermomedic's unique
patented bio-ceramic fibres improves localized blood circulation to assist the
body to heal naturally, without the intervention of drugs.

Ankle swelling may often result from injury or fluid retention. Causes of ankle
swelling may include disease and drug side-effect causes. Edema is the fluid
retention in tissues. It is important to consider Edema as a possible cause of
other medical conditions.

Parts of the body may swell in response to injury, infection or disease, or
because of an underlying lump. Swelling can also occur if the body is not
circulating fluid well (especially ankle swelling). Generalized swelling from fluid
retention is called edema. Lymph nodes may swell in response to infection.

Swollen ankles, feet and legs, referred to medically as edema, occur when
fluid is retained in the spaces between body cells. While edema typically
affects the feet, ankles and lower legs, it can also impact any area of the
body, causing systemic symptoms.

Causes:
Edema can be caused by a serious condition of the kidney, heart, liver or
blood vessels, but many other factors can contribute to its onset, including:
•        Eating a poor diet high in salt and carbohydrates
•        Abusing laxatives
•        Abusing diuretics
•        Abusing drugs
•        Taking birth control or hormone replacement therapy pills
•        Pregnancy and PMS
•        Sodium retention
•        Varicose veins and history of phlebitis
•        Allergic reactions
•        Neuromuscular disorders
•        Trauma

Symptoms:
Initially, the feet, ankles and legs will appear swollen as the day progresses, but after a period of time, the swelling will set in first thing in the
morning and continue to worsen throughout the day. Long-term edema causes pitting: When you press on the swollen area for a few seconds, you
will notice an indentation in that area. Continued swelling can cause skin ulcerations.
Over time, other symptoms will develop:
•        High blood pressure
•        Headaches
•        Increased urination
•        Palpitations
•        Swollen hands and/or wrists
•        Puffy eyes
•        Weight gain
Relief and Prevention:
The hallmark of treatment is to reduce foot, leg and ankle swelling, and the first line of defense: leg elevation. Elevate legs above the level of the
heart, which puts minimal pressure on the backs of the knees and thighs and lower back. Just sitting in a reclining chair in front of the TV is a great
way to elevate your legs. Many products, for use at home or at work, can also help reduce swelling.
Other aids include:
•        Leg wedges to elevate the feet while sleeping.
•        Support socks and stocking, either over-the-counter or custom-made.
o        Support socks and stockings come in various gradients depending on the pressure needed, and various lengths depending on the level of the
edema.
•        Proper fitting shoes and socks. Go out to buy new shoes in the afternoon to get the best fit.
Techniques to help decrease swelling:
•        Increase muscle activity with walking.
•        Avoid standing in place for long period of time.
•        Avoid sitting with the feet dependent.
•        Limit salt intake.
•        Do not abuse diuretics, but a short-term course may be helpful.
•        Do not abuse laxatives.
•        Drink plenty of water.
•        Avoid contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy if possible.
•        Use a compressions pump to help fluid return to the blood vessels.
is backed by independant clinical trials aimed at demonstrating fast-acting Gout pain relief . In the independent lab trial Uricinex was shown to be
99% effective in reversing Gout symptoms and pain almost immediately and naturally. What really matters in condition specific supplements is
fast-acting effectiveness and safety when you’re investing in your health and this is where Uricinex really outclassed the competition.
Overall cost vs. effectiveness was also very good. Uricinex wasn’t the cheapest product on test but considering the quality of ingredients, thorough
lab testing and overall effectiveness it certainly provided the best return on investment.
Gout is a result of too much uric acid in your blood. Uric acid buildup usually is a sign that your kidneys aren't cleaning our your blood as well they
should. Over time, this excess uric acid forms crystals between your joint spaces causing excruciating pain.
Gout (also called metabolic arthritis) is a disease due to a congenital disorder of uric acid metabolism. In this condition, monosodium urate or uric
acid crystals are deposited on the articular cartilage of joints, tendons and surrounding tissues due to elevated concentrations of uric acid in the
blood stream. This provokes an inflammatory reaction of these tissues. These deposits often increase in size and burst through the skin to form
sinuses discharging a chalky white material.
Gout usually attacks the big toe (approximately 75% of first attacks), however it can also affect other joints such as the ankle, heel, instep, knee,
wrist, elbow, fingers, and spine. In some cases the condition may appear in the joints of the small toes which have become immobile due to impact
injury earlier in life, causing
poor blood circulation that leads to gout.
Orthopedic Surgery is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of your body's
musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves and allows you to move, work
and play.
By one well studied outcomes measure, orthopedic procedures account for five of the ten most efficacious medical interventions. This means that,
from a patient's perspective
, treatment of specific orthopedic diseases, such as a rotator cuff repair, has a more significant impact on the overall
well-being of an average patient than treatment of conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and congestive heart failure. This is not to imply that
other disease treatments are unnecessary or ineffective; however, the impact of orthopedics on the perception of health of our society is significant.
The practice of orthopedic medicine has undergone seemingly incomprehensible change in recent decades. In recent years, advances in this area
of medicine have surpassed expectations of even the most ambitious minds
. Orthopedic surgeons can now place a joint prosthesis in people with
broken hips who were once limited to wheelchairs, and arthroscopic surgery allows physicians to look inside joints and perform complex
procedures without having to undergo a more serious open-joint operation. Less than one-half century ago many orthopedic problems were sure
signs of death or permanent disability, these problems are now being cured.
